Things To Do In El Paso

El Paso is known for many things such as the Rio Grande, which separates Mexico from the United States. El Paso has a rich history of culture due to its proximity to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Art, music, and food are all influenced by this fact. El Paso, Texas is a city with great weather, friendly people, and fun activities! There are tons of things to do in El Paso year-round. Whether you feel like spending the day outside or want to relax and enjoy some time indoors, there is always something exciting going on in El Paso.

Visit the Chamizal National Memorial

The Chamizal National Memorial commemorates one of many peaceful solutions to boundary disputes between nations. This international park honors the long friendship between Mexico and the United States that was solidified by this success story. From March through November (weather permitting), visitors can take a walk along part of the old border fence that separated El Paso from Ciudad Juarez.

Tour the Fort Bliss National Cemetery

Fort Bliss National Cemetery is located on the site of what was once Fort Bliss, an army post that dates back to 1854. There are more than 125,000 veterans buried here, including Medal of Honor recipient Maj. General Robert M. Danford and Brigadier General Frederick Louis Fox (the first soldier killed during World War I). The cemetery itself has one of the most beautiful outdoor settings around – even if you aren’t interested in learning about military history, it’s still a gorgeous place to spend some time!

Visit El Paso Holocaust Museum

Located inside the historic building of Temple Emanu El, the El Paso Holocaust Museum provides a place for learning about the atrocities of World War II. Exhibits include personal stories, photos, footage, and artifacts to give visitors an idea of what life was like inside the Auschwitz concentration camp. The museum also has special educational programs that are open to students groups by reservation.

Visit Chamizal National Park

Along with the international park located at the Chamizal National Memorial, another part of this historic area is located at 1 West University Avenue in downtown El Paso. This area includes historical exhibits about early Mexican settlers in the United States as well as cultural traditions found in both countries. There are also great views of the Rio Grande and Mexico from this park, making it a fantastic place to spend some time outdoors.

Eat at Cafe Mayapan

No matter what type of food you’re craving, Cafe Mayapan has something for everyone! With Mexican food options including tacos, enchiladas, tamales, menudo (on Saturdays), and pozole (on Sundays), as well as American cuisines like hamburgers and spaghetti – there’s really no need to leave this restaurant unsatisfied! Try their famous salsa bar while you wait for your meal – it comes with both mild and spicy salsas that are perfect for dipping chips or adding to your dish.

El Paso Zoo

One of the best places to visit in El Paso is their zoo located near downtown.  The El Paso Zoo features many different animals native to Texas and other areas in America including rhinos, giraffes, tigers, orangutans, lions, and bears. There are even exhibits for local species of bears, birds, and reptiles.  The zoo is home to over 1,200 animals that were rescued from places in need around the world. One of the most popular attractions at the El Paso Zoo is their new Sun Bear habitat which features two adorable sun bear cubs! The cubs came from a rescue center in Cambodia where they were left orphaned by their parents because they became trapped in snares meant for other wild animals. There’s also a great children’s petting zoo with domesticated goats and sheep that kids can interact with! As you can see, there are all kinds of exciting opportunities to get involved at the El Paso Zoo!

Franklin Mountains State Park

If you’re looking for a way to enjoy the outdoors but still want to be in an area with modern amenities, you can’t beat a visit to Franklin Mountains State Park in El Paso.  The park is located on a large mountain range that borders the city and it offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and even camping facilities for visitors who plan on spending the night. One of the most popular attractions at the park is McKelligon Canyon which has been designated as a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Visitors will find an abundance of rare plants and animals along this wide path leading up through McKelligon Canyon. There are also plenty of opportunities for rock climbing and rappelling in Franklin Mountains State Park!

The El Paso Museum of Archaeology

Spend some time at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology to learn about the fascinating history of the area!  The museum has one of the largest collections dedicated to pre-historic North American archaeology in an urban setting. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of their on-site excavation where archaeologists are actively unearthing new artifacts from around El Paso daily.

Fort Bliss

El Paso is also home to several historical sites like Fort Bliss which played major roles in shaping the city’s character and culture throughout history.   Fort Bliss was established as Camp Concordia in 1873, but by 1878 they had moved their location to where it stands today. Fort Bliss is currently home to the 1st Armored Division, one of the most decorated divisions in the entire United States Army. It is also home to the US War Dogs Association and The Outpost at Fort Bliss which offers an array of outdoor activities including paintball, archery, shooting sports, and more!
